| Old Tyrolean Bass Having Issues Advice Needed Hello, I have a Tyrolean bass which I presume was made in or around Mittenwald in the mid 19th century. This bass was restored by Kolstein in 2000, making it look nice and sound good in some areas. I play the crap out of it daily and it is about as open as it could be I suppose.
Issues: G string below first octave harmonic G is incredibly wimpy no matter what. A string has a terrible woof but can sound very good past the D or so (I found this odd). E string cant respond to my spicatto for jack squat. In all, the areas in which you would expect the instrument to sound bad and woofy, it responds. In areas that should have a meaty bassy sound, it fails to satisfy my tastes. There is also a small gap in the little piece bridging the fingerboard to the peg box on the E string side (this is not present on the other side).
About the only string that I love in all areas is the D. When I play mozart 40 last mvmt up in thumb, it sounds like a different bass.
Maybe this is wishful thinking, but I was hoping maybe someone has owned a bass like this and can elaborate upon what measures I could take to further enhance response.
The string length is around 41 1/4. 3/4 bass, small body in comparison to the string length, tail piece is NOT ebony, bridge is new with ebony adjusters.
Thanks, CL
