ah! I have one bass with string length of 38 1/4" and the "big" bass (pictured above) has a 40" mensure (and still a D neck and gargantuan neck heel)...the source of its problems (aside from its player) must be elsewhere!

hope your improvements turn out to be all you wish, musicman! sounds like you're really getting the works!

Well, my bass is due for pickup this week....the guys at Gage's shop asked for a few more days to finish, and I said no problem, since I purposefully have nothing lined up right now.
Will let you guys know how it turned out!

I GOT MY BASS BACK!

I picked it up from David Gage today and all I can say is wow. Beautiful work done exactly as I requested, and some extras to boot. The bass plays and sounds (and looks) 100x better.
I'll post pics as soon as I can so you guys can see the work. I'll also try to do some sound clips.
Regarding the neck shim in particular, they took it out, pulled the neck forward, put a new fingerboard on, got rid of the false nut, and reworked the bridge. What a difference!

Now it's time to practice.....alot!
