Question about soundpost placement.

I might have asked this before, but I can't find the thread, so if you've seen this already, I apologize.

I haven't done any adjustments to my bass in over a year, and I've finally decided that maybe the soundpost needs to be moved. It was custom made and fitted for this bass, so it fits very snugly, meaning it's not easy to just knock around and experiment with.

The sound issue is that the G is consistently too thin. When I try to fatten up the tone with my amp, then it makes the E too boomy. It doesn't seem to matter which strings I use. Currently I have Weichs, with a Mittel G. It's almost OK.

I haven't tried a Gut G, and I'm considering that. Any recommendations on which Gut G to try would be appreciated. I have a friend who used a Golden Spiral on the G with Spirochores, and loved that setup, but they don't make those any more.

OK, so the question is: Would moving the soundpost solve it? I know in theory it could, but I would like to know specifically from someone who knows. Can I move the post to shift bottom end from the E side of the bass to the G side and thus lightening up the E a little and fattening up the G.

The volume is not really problem, it's really more of a tone issue.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like your post might be too long. Being winter, your bass has probably shrunk some to sandwich the post in tighter. I'd get the post so that it's not in too tight then start experimenting with placement. I recommend a visit to your luthier for the adjustment..
