read the newbie faqs, but still unsure...

I have a new bass of the cheaper variety, but I'm just getting back into playing. Here are the problems I'm having with it:

1 - The bridge has popped out of place a couple times while playing it. I do try to have it centered at the f holes, but I think it moves slightly while I tighten the strings back up. Is the bridge popping out because it is possibly a little off center? If not, then how do I get it to stay in place while playing?

2 - The bass goes out of tune rapidly while playing (pizz). I'm talking 5-10 minutes of play or less. Is this a problem with the bass or the strings? How do I fix this?

I only played instruments provided by the school when I was in high school (several years ago), so I've never had to deal with these situations. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and information to help with these problems and also to determine if they are a result of my poor setup or just a poorly made bass. Thanks.

I suggest finding a repair person and having them look it over.

Various possibilities here:
1. bridge feet not properly fitted, bridge off center, bridge warped, bridge leaning.
2. Tuners are shot, neck is pulling forward, strings are shot, strings are not properly installed.

The toad is right, have it looked over by a repair guy.

Diagnosing the problem shouldn't cost you anything. It won't hurt to have it looked at. I've had instruments through my shop where I did some minor setup, soundpost tweaking and wouldn't think of charging someone for it. I believe Chris Threlkeld-Wiegand is still in Iowa. Take it to him. He's a fantastic luthier..
