Recommendations for SF area luthier for resto

Hi,

I am interested in getting my 1930s German bass restored or refinished. The poor thing is very scratched and pitted, and it's time to make it beautiful. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have someone I use for repairs, but I'm not sure if he's the best for this kind of work. Any recommendations for me?

Thanks!

huh? Hannah Mayne and Michael Olivola moved away to Alberqueque several years ago. Where ya been?

Try Matt Bohn down in Santa Cruz. http://www.thebassdoc.com/

I've only heard good things. Same goes with Jeff Sahs in Sacto.

Either that or Daughtery Violin Shop in Eureka if you're willing to make the drive. http://www.stringrepair.net/articles.html

Thanks for the tips. They're all actually a little far from me (I'm in Berkeley), but I'll look into it.

Alex Freidman does excellent work. Not the cheapest guy in town, but he makes up for it with the theatrics and a little education as well.

I've seen some nice total re- finish/restore and finish touch up work done over at Best Music Repair in Oakland. It's a large shop with a finishing area. Talk to Greg there.

I have been seeing Bruce Sexhauer in Petaluma. Not too bad a drive from the East Bay. (I sure miss Mike and Hannah, but Bruce has really come through for me with a great fingerboard dressing and a really good soundpost placement.)

Also, if you are really just looking for finish work, I have had some varnish work done at Ifshin Violins, now in El Cerrito. Ask for Colin.
