I was given a 1/4 size Kay with no neck so I am thinking of having some fun and making it into a removable neck bass. I built a "traviello" travel cello with a removable neck many years ago.
The thing that makes the 1/4 size desirable in my view is it is about as portable as it gets body size wise. I am having a little difficulty finding a 1/4 size replacement neck ( if anyone has one they want to sell pm me!). Gohliger is waiting on the factory to start some more production in a couple of months.
I used a hanger bolt in the neck of the travel cello and the bolt side went through the neck block and bolted underneath. I liked this arrangement because the hanger-bolt screw side has held very well in the maple neck. I dabbed some epoxy in the pilot hole before securing it. The only problem with this approach is if you keep the dovetail on the body. Of course there would be no way to slide the neck in place with bolts sticking out.
I plan on putting a trapdoor on the g side as well so the bolts can be secured with wing-nuts from inside the bass. It should be a fun project! I have just about all the pieces laying around and if I have to I'll just make my own neck.
