Removing bad paint job

Hi, I bought a bass that had a bad varnish job done to it.

It is a ply top bass.

as I was sanding down the neck last night I noticed that the bad paint job was put on over the original finish, the original finish was not sanded or anything, so the newer paint was flaking off.

Now for my question. does anyone know of any product or technique for removing the new paint and leaving the original intact... or is this a lost cause.

I will post up some pictures later tonight.
