retaching with glue?

Hey, I'm new, sorry if this asked alot. But I knicked off the tip of the corner of my bass, the ornament, you know I don't really know what it's called. But that corner closest to you, you know? It's just a very small part, and I was wondering if I wanetd to fix this myself instead of getting a luthier or profressional, what glue is recommended/safe? Thanks

reattching with glue

It depends on the instrument and your goals. Traditional repairs dictate using hide glue. This is generally in granular form and mixed with water, then heated in a double boiler. Liquid hide glue is also an option and easier to use.

The reason luthiers use hide glue is so any repair can be "undone". This is important if you want to repalce a fingerboard or need to remove the top.

The easiest and least expensive repair and it is just a violin corner that broke off, you could use superglue (cyanoacrylate). You'll have to decide what is best for your situation.

Do NOT use Super Glue. If you do, the next time that Top comes offf, you will pay extra for un-doing the repair, loose some original wood and pay for extra time getting the top off as well. NEVER Use Super Glue in any part of a Bass that has to be repaired in the future. Maybe to fix a bridge piece of shim a Nut piece but not touching the actual Bass. Liquid Hide Glue sold in the hardware store will come off easily when repaired in the future. Mix some in a plastic cup, add some water (less than 1/2) and nuke in the microwave for 30 seconds. Now you have some hide glue that will hold the repair and be easier for the Luthier to un-do and re-do in the future if necessary.

Any shop you see using 'Super Glue' (aka cyano') on the actual Bass, run the other way!

I know of at least one shop that does as well as uses Epoxy for repairs in the Top and I will not take Basses in trade that has been worked on there. This ruins the Bass as you must remove original unbroken wood to get the bad glue out of the pores of the wood to re-repair when the other non-hide glue repairs fail.

Ken,

Some intruments value may not be worth removing a top.

Really? So how would you fix a soundpost or bassbar crack on that bass in the future? How much more time to get the top off and re-repair it where the corner was crazy glued on?

I don't see any DBs in his gear list but he does like to describe himself as an "amateur gynecologist".

Probably belongs on the other side if he's really 40 years old and thinks that's cute.

"amateur gynecologist"? Crazy Glue?

And, this from his profile;

Previously owned gear:
Piezo Pickups for the URB. Underwood, Realist, Fishman Full Circle, BP-100, Schertler Dyna-B, Shadow, Wilson, K&K RB, Bass Max, Golden Trinity, Fishman Pro Platinum EQ, blender, B-Band Statement, D, Acoustic Image, G&K MB150s,e Phil Jones Suit Case, Flight Case, Brief Case, etc.

Areas of Instruction::
Double Bass (Classical), Double Bass (Jazz)
Teaching Credentials:
Not a teacher, but a bass technician.
Doesn't own a Bass, Never owned a Bass. Instruction in Classical Double Bass but not a Teaches but a technician.

How can he list DB/Classical as an area of instruction? I don't get it. Who would pay him for lessons and on what?

Something is either missing here or doesn't add up.
