Roth neck

Is it customary for the neck on a Roth to be screwed down, from the inside of the bass?

if your talking about a Scherl and Roth then i dont believe so. I have one on the bench right now, and it has no screws.

I'm off today, but I'll take some pics later.

Bizarre...

we have one on the bench, it has one. I'll take a picture to see if they look the same as there is no way to tell if it is original or not.

Attachment 143270
This is the portion of the screw extending from the block.
To the right, just left of the tape, you can see where it entered
the neck.

Attachment 143271
Where it exited the body.

The bass in question is a 1962 Ernst Heinrich Roth.

I do not believe the screw is original to the instrument, but I
do not
know for sure.

The neck broke at the screw hole, but it is a clean break. I'm
thinking of gluing it with something like Gorilla glue, then
doweling it. I have the missing piece of back and it will cover
the dowel completely. No screw when I re-attach the neck,
however.

Good or not good plan?

There's no button. You will have to take the back off and graft a button. Otherwise just simply gluing the neck to the block will mess with your neck angle over time or worse..

Unless you are a luthier, this is not a project you can handle. Gorilla glue will only make matters worse in that, when it breaks again and you surrender to taking it to a luthier, you'll double or triple your bill because the bass will need a new neck block. Gorilla glued joints are not reversible..

I'd suggest finding a reputable luthier in your area. That $5 bottle of gorilla glue will end up costing you thousands in the end. Good luck!

Hi Carl,
Are you planing on just gorilla gluing the broken pieces of the heel together? That's not as bad as using the stuff to glue the neck back in place (have to use hide glue for that joint), but the top part of the back that's missing is called the button and its an integral part of the structure of the neck joint. As Cody said, you'll have to get a button graft done and that's not that easy. A trip to your local luthier is called for really.
Best of luck
