| | | | Sound clip of my bass Hey all,
Well it's been a year or two at least since I've posted anything, so I don't know if many will remember me. I had to start a new account, I couldn't figure out how to log in today.
The forum was a huge help in guiding me through two bass builds, and I finally have a sound clip of the second bass so I thought I'd share the results of all your help. A big thanks once again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-XvDYhhfKY

Darren, is the #1 bass still locked away? That was a sad story. |

That is really sad. How many hours do you reckon you spent building that one? And how many on the second one? |

That bass sounds really good - looks great too. I was just mentioning your violins to a customer at the store the other day. Nice work. |

| | | | Nice bass, nice playing, nice music! Great job!
The bridge looks a bit unusual (at least as well as I can tell on YouTube) - did you cut off the "arms," and if so, how did it change the sound?

But, looking back they don't seem so bad now. The first one took longer for sure, I made the design from scratch and all that. And it had violin style corners as well as a carved back. Add to that the time I spent in bed from throwing my back out carving the front. This second one has gamba corners and a flat back so I found it easier over-all. But between other repairs and commisions for violins,a viola and one cello, they each took about a year each, if I remember correctly.
Don't tell my wife, but I actually have an itch to make another one |

Joe | Thanks Joe, yes the bridge did have its wings cut off. Richard was a student of Joel Quarington, who is an advocate of wingless bridges. It added a brightness and clarity to the notes that I think added a nice character to the bass overall. I'm actually going to cut a more traditional bridge for it soon, just so he has a broader range of colours to play with. |
