Hi Eric. Thanks for the quick mention.('My apologies for my ancient website....) Here is the link to the entire thread on the ported bass:
james' bass build
Here is the direct image of the port in its current state:
As for the results, after six months of using it and making a few modifications, I'm hooked! If you read through the build thread, at first it was a little on the small side and I felt like not much was happening. After a bit of opening it up and experimentation, I REALLY like the results.
Keep in mind that this was not my first ported instrument, and it is not for everyone. I've built approx. 30 mandolins and guitars utilizing some variation on the theme since 1995 and I've probably played and worked on another 50-100 or more over at Dream Guitars. 'Not reccommended on your 1890 bass.......
By the way, I saw the Infamous String Dusters last night at the Orange Peel here in town playing one of your basses and using one of your pickups and the sound was INCREDIBLE. Not so much like a double bass, but almost like a hip hop club or rave mix where the bass completely dominated and owned every tune in a band where all the fellows were outstanding! Lets just say that the ladies were a bumpin' and grindin' away with a big smile all during the show....
