I did the neck on my Strunal with boiled linseed oil. I took all the varnish off and then oiled it. I don't see any discoloration in the wood, it actually looks better than the orange finish that's applied at the factory. The one thing I noticed was it took a little while for linseed oil to dry and the neck felt a little gummy. But that cleared up quickly.

Look at http://www.woodnshop.com/MSDS_SHEETS/WATCONATGAL.htm

You have to do a little addition of the hazardous and non hazardous ingredients in this MSDS.

Thanks Pete. That is certainly easier to figure out than what I found.

More that You Ever Wanted to Know About Linseed Oil

I ran across this web page while I was shopping for some good violin varnish. This should clear up most of the questions asked about linseed oil.

My neck

I took the gloss and paint (fake flames) off of my neck and finished it with an artists grade, non-boiled linseed oil. I really didnt have any problems with it drying, because i rubbed it in really good. It worked wonderfully, and every once in a while for maintenance, and the quest for the perfectly smooth, silky neck, ill run the 0000 steel wool over it. I noticed a few rougher spots after playing it for a few weeks, and took care of those too. It plays much better, and after i got my neck replaned, I got no complaints or compliments from the luthiers at the shop.

I finally found some Watco danish oil and completed the job. There is a VAST improvement over the original finish. I played several sets at an outdoor festival in central Mississippi <super humid> and found that the neck was now slicker than deer guts on a doorknob. By the way, I used a shade called Golden Oak and it almost perfectly matched my Swingmaster's finish.

Sticky necks

Ok, nobody laugh, but I use a no frills foot power on my neck to keep it from ever getting sticky. Feels and works great.

the MSDS of my favourite danish oil - as yet untested by me on an instrument - reports it is made of Kerosine (>30%) synthetic polymers (>30%), mineral turps (>10% <30%)

This is getting close to rocket science!

Degloos Engelhardt neck

My local luthier deglossed my Engelhardt EM-1 and treated it with artist quality boiled linseed oil for only $50. Was worth it, as I would likely have made a mess of it. Made a big difference. By local I mean Columbia, Missouri, and yes, he is a trained violin maker.
