String salvage--any ideas?

A few weeks ago, a luthier broke the winding on my A string at the bridge. He apologized and ordered me a replacement string, which he expected would take a month to show up.

Fortunately for me, the damage stayed on the tailpiece side of the bridge for quite a while, and the string played fine. But this morning, I heard the telltale buzz, and sure enough the winding had become loose at the end of the vibrating length of the string.

I pulled the loose bits of the winding as tight as I could, and I wrapped some electrical tape around the offending area. This seems to work ok (I've used it once before), better for pizz than for arco. There's a little bit of buzz, but it seems like I've stopped the string from unraveling further for now.

I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience with this kind of a situation annd/or any better ideas as to how to make the string last a little longer. I have a spare if need be, but it doesn't have the all-important gut core of the damaged string, and so I'm hoping to keep this string alive for another week or two until the replacement shows up.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Aaron

CA might work, but something with a little elasticity might work better. Try some epoxy. Maybe wrap some epoxy-soaked linen over the string so you can compress the winding a little.

Shrink wrap tubing from radio shack works great!
