Strings Breaking!

Well, I'm freaking out. Until this year I'd never broken a string. In August I got to a gig an hour from home and found my beloved Golden Spiral G had broken in the case. I was hearbroken and had to play a borrowed slab from a well meaning bystander. (The slab well, that's another story). So I ended up finding a Golden Tone G at some considerable expense and it's been a fine replacement. I got to a gig last Friday night and the G had broken again. So please help! The strings are breaking right at the ball end. I have a Thomastik tailpiece with 4 fine tuners. Any thoughts? I've got another gig on Saturday and I'm not inclined to invest in any new good strings or count on this bass for gigs until I've got some repair.

maybe you have a bur on the g fine tuner. check to see if there is anything sharp or pokey. good luck

make sure the tuner cups the ferrel correctly...replace if any doubts...and i'd be tying a $10.00 knot and trimming the tail in the bottom of both of those broken $trings

Knots are free! What's a ferrel and what do you mean about the tuner cupping it? Thanks. Boom

I think Mr Subaru means that the 'ferrule', the metal anchor at the end of the string, needs to be gently cradled in the fine tuner on your tailpiece. You might check that the string is not kinked as it goes through the tailpiece.

Similar here: 1984 VW Vanagon GL, 1990 VW Golf and 1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender for which I have a 2.5 litre Subaru motor. I'm going to have to shut down for a couple of weeks this spring so that I can install it.
