The answer might be more obvious than I thought. Mike at David Gage's shop suggested --I'm paraphrasing-- that my bass resonates very well and that I have pretty lively stings on it, Superflexibles. Before the Superflexibles I used Spirocores. Other people's basses that I've played have had strings on them with somewhat less sustain-- Olivs, Animas, D'Addario Hybrids, or Corellis. So maybe vibration isn't a bad problem to have in this instance.

The problem of unpleasant noise happening when I press DOWN on the strings I'm still working on.
