I have a tail piece with the metal wire and the two holes/fasteners in the front. Can I swith to tail gut and retain the tail piece or do I have to purchase a new tail piece?

You can change over just fine Dad. Are you going to stainless wire or the new aramid rope type?

That should work out fine.

If you want your bass to sound the same afterward, make sure to take note of what the afterlength sounds like before you remove the tailpiece. If you want it to sound better, tune the afterlength to 2 octaves and a fourth (or fifth) afterwards.

By afterlength do you mean the length of the strings from the lower end of the bridge to the tailpiece?

That is great to know, I am undergoing the very same process. How do you recommend fastening it to the tailpiece with the two holes through the front?

Thanks!
