Tailpiece Thickness

This may be an odd question:

When sighting down the length of a tailpiece from the top near the fret, should the thickness of the material ABOVE the fret be of a consistent thickness?

If it's not, does it matter?

I just got a new tailpiece and one side is a little thicker, and the fret is a little taller on the thinner side (I suppose to compensate).

I've not been presented with this thickness descrepancy before, so I thought I'd ask. If it is a big deal, I'll return the product.
