Temperature

I keep my Chrissy ply in my studio in the garden. It can get down to -5 or so this time of year centigrade, I heat the room before I play so it is constantly going from warm to cold in winter.

Is this going to cause me any trouble in the long run.

Avoiding extremes of temperature change is always good for wooden things like a UB. Excessive heat is worse than cold IMHO. If possible I would try to keep it in a cool, not cold space.

That just can't be good. I think you're flirting with danger.

Granted the Chrissy probably has a much higher quality varnish, but temperature swings in South Bend were the likely cause of heavily checking the finish on my old Kay. There were a number of occasions where I had to leave the bass in my car, in the dead of winter, and I thought to myself, what can harm a Ply bass?

When you heat up a sub-freezing room the humidity will drop to near zero. Don't do this!

I guess I'll be bringing the bass inside tonight. Thanks all.

Does "r.t.swing," by any chance, stand for "rapid temperature swing?"

Actually it from a Wynton Album; Resolution To Swing, but your version may be more truthful.

Best rule of thumb regarding temperature, humidity and musical instruments: if it is not comfortable for you, then it's not comfortable for the instrument.

+1! That's a rule I usually follow and quote as well.
