Tension

I'm using an Eberle plywood bass and Compas 180 strings.

I recently broke the E string. I've continued to play while waiting for a replacement, and while doing so, the tone and projection of the bass has improved while having only three strings.

Could this indicate an overall problem with the tension on the top (too much?) or a poorly placed soundpost?

Sounds like a tension issue, doesn't it? Of course, the soundpost may need adjusting too but that's a pretty linear demonstration you've arranged there!

I would try some lower tension strings.
