Could anybody advise me how to sand a top just to increase the relief between dark and clear vein?

I think you mean texture, is that right, masterbass?

Scraping the wood, instead of sanding is the way to get that look.

the easy method to start with,if you don't have a lot of experience with scrapers, would be to scrape with those utility disposeable razor blades, and then burnish the wood with a white or grey scotchbrite pad. ( synthetic steel-wool, very very fine)

And when you are done, if you really want more relief, wipe it down quickly with a slightly damp rag. The soft grains will swell, and the wood will take on a distinct "corduroy" look.

I used to stain my wood (violins, violas) with coffee, before varnishing...of course the corduroy effect was heavily accentuated...some people liked it a lot; others were put off by it.

I used the damp rag on my bass, and it gave a nice "in-between" look, which I promptly sealed with shellac, then glazed to accentuate the color differences, and then proceeded to varnish.
