Top repair (***sob***)

Last night, my roommate allegedly caught his shirt on my bass (which was in its case, sitting in the upright position in a stand) and knocked it over. It hit the floor right on the bridge, and there is now a large crack in the top going from the shoulder all the way to near the bottom of the bass.

I'm going to attempt to get it to a repairman ASAP - this is difficult seeing as I don't have a car. But when I do eventually see the repairman, what should I expect to hear from him? I would also appreciate price quotes from people who have had this kind of thing repaired.

Yes, I am insured. No, I'm not sure how my roommate managed to accidentally knock the bass off the stand.

Wow, sorry to hear that...it makes my stomach hurt just to think about it.

First thing to do: either go kick your roomate's ass RIGHT NOW, or make him feel so guilty that you'll never have to wax your car (when you get one) again for the rest of your life.

Next, get that thing to a luthier. My teacher's 18th century bass had an implosion of the top last year, and the guys at the Bass Cellar were able to fix it. The top had to come off, they had to make a plaster cast, etc., yadda yadda, but they got it done and it played great when he got it back. I think they also allow "loaners" on occasion when the repairs are extensive.

Best of luck on the repair. Thats the 2nd bass that fell out of a stand this week! (talkbass) Was it one of those cheap tube stands?
