Unusual bridge alteration

Recently I saw a bass where the bridge (solid, non-adjustable) had notches, about 5mm tall, right above the feet, bringing the leg thickness to maybe 4-5mm in that spot. The rest of the legs, and the bridge, were standard shape. The notches were going in along the East-West axis, so to speak. I take it the effect would be increased flexibility right above the feet, short of installing some sort of a hinge - an idea which has been brought up here before.

Am I just too new to this, or is this really a unique thing?

I think if you had looked closer you would see that each foot is joined to the leg with a jig-saw - type "hinge" allowing the feet to conform to almost any top shape.

the bridge is sold like that and quick to fit for those who don't want to get a regular bridge cut

they are sized as low ,medium,or high. i believe they have been around since the 60's,we toss all violin/viola installs but let the cello/bass remain for the life of the bridge.

No kidding, I should have noticed those hinges. I only looked from the north side and couldn't tell there were any sockets/hinges.

Thanks for clearing that up.
