Weedwacker strings/ tuning machines

Im just being introduced to the world of double bass, and i want to make my own "DIY" style upright, because money is tight and i think it would be cool to build my own. normal double bass tuning machines are pretty pricey, and so are strings, so i was thinking of using the FMI weed wacker pro strings. what are the chances of getting double bass strings, into bass guitar tuning machines? (like the fender style). remember that the weedwacker strings are nylon.
