What Kind of Glue for Fingerboard?

Howdy All,

The fingerboard on my upright bass is detaching and I was thinking of taking it to a luthier to have it re-glued. The thought also crossed my mind that surely I could do it myself. I was wondering though, if there is some special type of glue that should be used or if regular old carpenter's glue is the order of the day.

Does anybody have any thoughts or tips before I make a big mistake?

Regards,
Michael Floyd

Use HIDE glue

If you want to DIY; Please...only use hide glue. This is not a religious mantra, but a practical point-- fingerboards occasionally need to be removed, replaced, whatever. Hide glue makes it possible.

Incidentally, Franklin's liquid hide gluie is not the same stuff. Get the dry crystals, or flakes, or whatever, and reconstitute them in hot water.

Your luthier will thank you
