Wood shopping list...

What kind of wood and what size wood would you buy if you are going to build a double bass? I'd like to know what thickness I'd need for the front and the back and what type of wood would be ideal.

At first I wanted to use cheap materials to make my double bass but i thought about it some more and have decided I am going to use quality materials so I'll end up with a quality instrument in the end.

What would your shopping list look like if you'd put all the wood on it you'd need to buy to completely build a very nice double bass??

I am really hoping to get some answers here so I can get started. Thanks!

Hey Zerotonine, welcome, well the best answer I know not what your looking for, but research, research, and do it again. I just read an article last week which gave a basic statement that one can not go wqrong with any combination of Hard wood, back/side with any given soft wood top. Now keep in mind whhat you use for your top. So look at what kind of wood you like the looks of, curley maple, seems to be a favorite, I know you'll get a lot of different answers. But here in anut shell look around and the ideas will come to you. I came here looking for about the same thing, and I found my answers mainlty by resarch. Look at links and this will give you some ideas.

I have another question. What's the tool that's being used at 1:30 in the video below?

If u are talking about the tool with a dial it's a caliper.

How does he use the caliper? I don't see what he is measuring.
I understand how calipers normally work but don't you need two points to measure something. It looks like he is just going along the surface of the top...

(having not viewed the video)the top surface is 0 . he is logging the varied thicknesses of the carved underside with the point opposite the dial indicator (out of sight) you will better comprehend this proceedure as you get down to the buisness of your top construction.
