Question $75... what would you blow it on?

Ok, so I've got a $75 gift card to Guitar Center that expires Monday... I don't need anything specific right now, and don't know what to get.

What would you blow it on?

What effects pedal would you buy for $75?

One or two sets of flats. They'll serve you for a lifetime.

If I had it to blow, I would try some strings that I had never thought of trying. You could get a few sets. If you string 'em up and don't like them, so what. But you COULD discover a set of strings that changes everything about the way you think about playing, tone, etc.

I have been wanting to try some flats on the squire just for ha-ha's to see how they sound. What ones would you recommend?

Sorry, I was making a bad joke and was unclear in my phrasing - was suggesting you use the gift cards to buy more gift cards that weren't going to expire so quickly.

Ah, I missed it!.. It's been a long week, and I think they have a restriction on that..

Monday is the Memorial Day sale, right?

That's tight timing, but I'd say shelve any specific recommendations here and just show up early. Hit the list quick and make your move.

I was told my my local store manager that this year the sale is supposed to be a pretty good one -- for a change.

I know, that's the other kicker, I'll be out of town for the weekend so the purchase needs to be made either Friday or late Monday... I never noticed the stinking expiration date until yesterday... (sigh)

If you want something that responds in a pretty similar way as regular rounds, try the d'addario chromes. They're surprisingly bright flats but have a strong clear fundamental that I like a lot, especially on my stingray copy.

For more typical flatwound sounds, try labella deep talkin' flats, pyramid golds or fender 9050 flats.

Thomastik-Infeld jazz flats are many people's favs as well and they're very nice with a strong midrange response. They are Very low tension, which you have to adjust to if you're used to stiffer strings. I have a set on my fretless squier VM jazz and they're great for that.

A decent DI box for all those shows you'll be playing.

In CA, it's not legal for a gift card to have an expiry date, so if you don't manage to spend it you can put it to one side for the next time you visit a CA Guitar Center.

Good call, I"ve heard the labellas before and liked them. What are the pyramid golds like?

Yet another reason for me to move to my butt out of MI to CA.
