I haven been playing bass for 5 years and never really thought about this until today. My fingers are all twisted and bent!?!? I was like "when did this happen!" Look at JB's hand right hand.

His fingers are all weird. My guitar teacher has been playing for 40 years and his are twisted like no other. Is this from playing stringed instruments or what?

maybe you had freakish deformed fingers before playing?

I mean mine are all crooked and bumpy but that includes fingers which I don't use for bass (all 2 of them)

I dunno, but I remember from the school biology classes that there is a different gene for crooked index finger and straight index finger. So it could be genetic.

Regarding your teacher's fingers: twisted and/or odd-looking like they're adapted to playing a guitar? Or like the finger joints are swollen in random ways?

My grandfather (who didn't play any musical instrument) had a severe case of arthritis. Near the end of his life his finger joints and elbows were deformed from it.

OTOH, check out Freekbass's, Bootsey's, or Jaco's right hand thumb. Looks weird, how the joint goes backward, eh? I'm guessing part genetics and part adaptation to playing. (Pure guess on my part.)

Have you always had crooked fingers (or had them for years) or are you just noticing this?
The only way to know if this is the early signs of something is to have a doctor look at it. The causes can range from nutrient deficiencies in childhood to disease or possibly genetics. Talk to a doc. It's probably nothing but wouldn't you like to be sure?
