Spend some money ($200ish) on some good headphones, they will last you a long-long time, you will get many years of enjoyment from them and not regret the purchase. I've got some Sennheiser HD580s now, and I can't stand my old cheap headphones anymore. I understand there's a somewhat affordable AKG that is very good too, I don't know the model, but somebody will, especially at a decent shop.

There are several AKG headphones that I would call cheap (in price). K44s and K77s can be had for under $50 and they're very nice. I have AKG 240Ms from my radio station days that are awesome, but their replacement - the K240 MKII - are $200.

The new AKGs are superior to mine - the cables are detachable.

I'd go the other route (opinion)

I own the studio standard Sonys (about $125)..

I find the In ears to be more useful...

Either Phillips Ipod in ears (about $20) or IE-10s if you want to have the MTV cool look. (about $70 on sale)

On one of my practice setups, I actually have some $20 Coby phones that go down to 20hz... when practicing it doesn't matter they're not my $200 AKG

Just get a decent closed back studio monitor headphones.

I like the AT ATH-M50 they can be had on ebay/amazon for around $100 and you'll be able to use them for a very long time if they're taken care of. They have a very even frequency response and good bass.

Department stores.

Sounds as if this is the direction you need/want.

IF you're this tight on cash.. ask some old folks around you if they have any headphones.

IN the 80s there were some GREAT phones that had full response.. This would be more than enough for what you're doing... sure they looked dorky.. but so does getting screamed at by mom and dad

The key on practice headphones is getting quality hardware (that doesn't break) and a 20hz rating so you can hear the low end.

Why not post on Craigslist or search? I'm sure one of your neighbors has a set from the 80s craze.

Break down and buy some Grado's, you will never use crappy headphones again.

Carvin has their studio headphones on sale right now. About $30.00 I think.
