When I want airlines to give me special attention, I tape 2 basses together in hardshell cases.. this is cumbersome enough that it gets hand - moved.
5 was a dog.

The only "feasible" option for a new one would be DIY if $600 is too much for You.
A second hand KBD case or a mixing console case would be the next logical step, not cheap though. The cheapest/easiest to find might be a standard utility case for stands, lights, cables etc. Those come in all sizes and dimensions, every ATA case manufacturer makes them.
Have You given a single thought to the weight?
A "normal" bass is about 5Kg, a plywood ATA case for a bass 15Kg, a composite ATA perhaps 10Kg. That's at least 20 Kg You'd be hauling around, most likely closer to 30Kg.
Regards

And I'm fairly certain it's always been well over $600. My Anvil ATA-series flight case was almost $600 for a single instrument! |

Apparently, the company that made them for Fender stole the idea from another company, and were issued a cease and desist .
