Throwing in extra measures and "stretching" the structure of the tune just to accomodate a blatant ego trip composed of wall-to-wall vocal flourishes is something I don't think is appropriate in the slightest for this particular gig
If she did that at a Vegas show, or in concert somewhere, I would have no problem with it. At a sporting event, the performer's task is to serve the song, not their own ego
It's not a Gospel tune, by any stretch of the imagination. Trying to put that kind of spin on it - at a ball game - is extremely disrespectful IMHO. In this, it is no different from the Roseanne Barr abomination cited in the OP

That version was arraged by John Clayton, a fantastic bassist, producer and arranger. For the opening of the largest TV sporting event of the year, with America at war, it was entirely appropriate, IMO.

I found both the arrangement and the performance distasteful

Apparently, in most people's minds, too.

the world series anthems have all been pretty terrible imo. so flat and boring. im not saying you have to go all whitney with it and make it your own, completely. but a little umph and soul is never a bad thing.

I get chills like the first time I heard it...Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Richard Street, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Ron Tyson were on it...remember Marvin had a nice bass track, but Melvin Blu Franklin, oh lawd !!!...the BEST BASS voice.
The Tempt's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PKZ8...om=PL&index=41

Interestingly enough, the only original contribution by the writer, Francis Scott Key, was the lyrics. The tune itself was from a popular drinking song of British origin
Americans who value peace more highly than war tend to think that the choice of this particular song as the National Anthem was a grievous mistake, and a much better choice would be America the Beautiful. It is extremely unlikely that this will ever happen, for political reasons that I am not allowed to get into on this particular forum
