| You wouldn't find Ella or Sinatra on there because Rolling Stone likes to limit these lists to people who at the very least had some role in the development of rock and roll. (Hank Williams <-- an influence; Ella <-- not so much)
I think the list was good, by and large. Often, people like to explain away the omission of their favorites by calling Rolling Stone "Jann Wenner's aging hippie rag" or something. But, actually, the people voting on these lists come from a pretty wide background, and this time I think the youngsters inflicted the most damage. (Joe Cocker should have been in the top 20, at least, IMO, and he was WAY down the list.)
Still, you can't argue with Aretha at #1, Ray Charles at #2...
And ranking Christina Aguilera above Mariah Carey made sense, I think... |
