And some of his material, while mega-commercial, has been absolute treacle. He seems to be trying harder these days, and there's no denying that he's an amazing guitarist. Those of us of a certain age, though, were taken aback by the post-Derek Eric. | I'd say there's something wrong with your reading skills. Sure, he told the truth about being a hard-core alcoholic for 20 years, but I never heard him say he didn't care about his albums, or his music. The fact that he did put out so many good albums over that time says a lot. Sure, there were some that weren't so good, but so what?
If he hadn't been an alcoholic, no doubt his music over that period would have been better, but basically you're slamming the guy for writing a very honest account of a serious addiction. Do you know anything about alcoholism? I somehow doubt it, otherwise you would know it's a damn miracle he managed to be that productive for so many years with a such a serious problem.
I don't care if you criticise his music, but criticising the man for a having a severe, long term addiction is ludicrous, and rather naive if you want my opinion.
"squandering his extraordinary gifts" - just make a list of the musicians of that era and beyond who did the same thing - it's a long list, and most of them are dead. |

Eric is a once in a life time artist.
He beat his demons years ago and came back to us with beautiful song, skills and world class performances like the one on 12/12/12.
If I had to deal with some of the things Eric did, I would be dead.

As for that Kayne, what a git. I had him on "mute", but I noticed the way he left the stage - just threw his mic on the ground and walked off. Even if he thinks that's cool for his fans, this was a charity show, and he couldn't be bothered to say "thank you" to the audience. Complete wanker. He's another one who'll be long forgotten soon enough.

Blue | Not sure why he's anywhere - what a non- artist.
And the whole drop the mic and leave thing...really??
What an egomaniac...

What an egomaniac... | Yeah, it didn't go down well with the audience either. Call me old fashioned, but not thanking or even acknowledging an audience is pitiful. No talent, no class either. |

Definitely no class. That has been demonstrated time and time again. |

Definitely no class. That has been demonstrated time and time again. | I can't name one of his songs or recognize one, however I wouldn't want to compare the money I have made this year to what he has made.

Blue | Yeah, he's made a lot of money, but so have McDonalds, and the worst cook in the world can make a better hamburger than the swill they serve up.
Money has little to do with quality; the music industry these days is conclusive proof of that fact. I couldn't name one his songs either, and I bet in 5 years, nobody else will be able to either. The music industry seems to have modelled itself on the fast food industry. Flood the airwaves with swill, promote the hell out of it, and the masses will follow like sheep. It works, so they just keep churning them out like Big Macs. |

Most humans don't like to admit (or even acknowledge) the truth that the general human population are sheep because by admitting that implicates ourselves (since we ourselves are members of the human race, and finding fault with the human race would mean finding fault with ourselves.....something many humans just don't like to do for some reason). Is the human ego really that fragile and insecure? (yes).
I love to sit back and watch the masses of humans fall mindlessly for the next flavor of the month, whether it be music, clothing, electronic gizmos.....whatever the latest "buzz" is. I often wonder what it would be like for a group of aliens traveling through space who happen to fly near Earth and just hover in space nearby to observe us humans for a good long while, and then, they look at each other in disbelief and say "you have GOT to be kidding!" George Carlin spent a good portion of his life trying to get us to see how ridiculous we humans are.
As for Clapton, my wife and I greatly dislike any of his music material. (Strictly opinion, of course.) Whenever we are driving and listening to the radio, as the next song starts, if it's anything by Clapton, we both reach for the channel knob (or off switch) as rapidly as humanly possible. We do the same thing with Nickelback and Lynyrd Skynyrd. All personal preference, of course!
