Question 1800s American Folk Music

Sign in to disble this ad
I am working on composing music for a educational video game set in an edgar alan poe world, and was wondering what sort of americana folk music was around that I could use for inspiration. Any help would be much appreciated.

Poe was dead by 1849 and he was one of the few Southern writers of any merit, so look for minstrelsy songs. Stephen Foster, the white northerner who wrote "Dixie," and E.P Christy's spiritual arrangements come to mind. Italian opera was also really popular.
