Hey TB'ers,
I've got my first real audition tomorrow, I'm friggin scared yo
It's a bunch of old married farts like myself (20's-30's) around here that get together every week. They only want me to come by and just play some root notes or somethin to their songs as they rehearse. Talkin to one of the guys, it seems as if they just want to see if I'm a guy who is cool to hang around with and digs their music. They don't even want me to get any songs down, but they are sending me chord progressions for their songs so I can follow along. Seems like it'll turn out well, but I still have all the excitement and fear and anxiety that I had on my wedding day (except, of course, for the sinking feeling of myself dying on the inside just a little bit, day by day)
Please wish me the best guys

1. relax.
2. don't overplay. If anything... underplay.
3. relax.
4 don't overplay.

Have fun!
Relax!
Don't fap on the fretboard! |

| | | | They just want to see you as you are.
A wise man once told me, " Your playing gets you noticed...your table manners gets you gigs" Good luck my friend. |

And the audition will be fine. Just follow all the advice you already know: be yourself, have fun, don't overplay, don't hit on the other dudes' wives, etc. |

I used to be scared of speaking in public. I got over it when I noticed I could not tell the difference, physically, between being scared & being excited. The sensations are just the same for me. FWIW, I get really excited before every performance!
Keep in mind, you have noting to lose, no one will get hurt & someone else will probably buy the beer!
Enjoy the excitment. I hope you find some new friends. 8-)

I know all of the suggestions are somewhat obvious but I needed them...I feel I have more of a leg to stand on now. Thank you everyone for this forum...in the 25 or so days since I signed up, it has been priceless to me. I'll be a supporting member soon, I'm a little broke (just got finished being laid off for 9 mos.) but I feel it's only right to contribute to such an awesome cause. I'll try to top makisupastar's oprah avatar with a funny one of my own :O)

| | | | The number one thing I always done for an audition was to let THEM ask me to 'turn up a little.' There ain't nothing more frustrating than auditioning a new guys, whatever his instrument may be, and having him playing on "7", when the rest of the band is playing on "5." Some think the band wants to hear the new guy, but really, they want to see if he'll 'mesh with the band.' I used to love it when, after the audition, one of the first things out of their mouths was, "Well, I really liked the fact that you didn't come in here and rattle the walls right off the bat." Besides, if they're any type of musicians that you'll want to play with, they'll be able to 'hear thru the mix' if you hit a wrong chord.
Number 2.) know their chord progressions in ANY KEY. You never know when the singer might say, "Hey guys, my voice is a little weak tonight. Can we play this down a step or two."
Other than those two things...just play...it's what you love to do, so do it! |

Just don't expect me to call you "Sonny". 8-0

It sounds like a great low pressure way to audition.

Most of the chord progressions were pretty easy, and on the harder ones they didn't mind when I missed the changes. I kept hearing one of the g***st say to the drummer "man, this guy's good!" Said I made them "feel" the drums, and they said I picked up the more boring songs and carried them along.
They said they weren't going to look for anyone else. I know that that is mainly because they aren't all super-wired musicians (even though those guys were good) looking to get a record deal right away, but it still felt good to finally start my journey as a musician and bandmate. I should've done this a long time ago
