Question the 2000's and beyond. What happened and what's going to happen?

This thread is about the 2000's and what occurred in it musically, and where you think music is going.

IMO/IME:

Pop music was largely dominated by ultra-produced hiphop stuff, with redundant auto-tuned vocals singing in the absence of rapping. Rap was also very large in the mainstream, reveling in a "gangsta" culture.

Electronica and techno got pretty huge, at the expense of many of the more creative artists being overshadowed by cut/paste "unce unce" trance DJ's.

In terms of popular rock, the "alternative" bands ruled the airwaves (stuff like Creed, Nickleback, Sum41, etc). We also saw the rise of the "emo" movement, which got fairly large whilst being almost universally scorned by every other human on the planet.

Metal has largely given over to the "cores" (metalcore and hardcore bands). Minor tonality riffs with mixed screams/clean vocals, usually with a slow chugga chugga breakdown in every other song. Thrash and Death Metal have dwindled, going further underground, with very few new bands emerging.

Modern jazz (from what I've heard of it) seems to have greatly expanded its musical purview, incorporating many different styles and rhythms rather than continuing with the hard bop or cool jazz paradigms established in the last few decades. Everything I've heard sounds more "fusion-ish" rather than traditional. I personally applaud this, I think it sounds great!

I don't listen to country, and don't have any idea what's going on in the "classical" genres.

what's coming next? I think we can expect to see many genres blended together, simply because of the ready availability of music and music recording.

what do you all think?

I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. To add to it I think there's been a great polarization in just about all of the major genres between being "pop" and being more "avant garde". For example: metal. Taking a band like Godsmack and Nickelback and then taking a band like Blotted Science and Obscura. I guess some craved fame and fortune and the others craved musical expression. Nothing wrong with either.
