2012 Rock & Roll HOF Nominees

Sign in to disble this ad
Oops! I put in the wrong info:

The nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 were announced today!

The nominees are:
· Beastie Boys
· The Cure
· Donovan
· Eric B. & Rakim
· Guns 'N Roses
· Heart
· Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
· Freddie King
· Laura Nyro
· Red Hot Chili Peppers
· Rufus with Chaka Khan
· The Small Faces/The Faces
· The Spinners
· Donna Summer
· War

This is IMO a better list than last year! It will be interesting to see who actually makes it.

Again, no Rush!

I've given up on the integrity of the R&R Hall Of Fame. For many in the music industry and fans of ROCK AND ROLL...this is a complete waste of time and a gigantic joke.

Honestly, if you don't know who Darlene Love is, you probably have no business discussing Rock & Roll in any historical context. Gotta know where you came from before you know where you're going. Start at Phil Spector, architect of arguably the greatest rock single ever released: "Be My Baby"- and you'll find your way to Darlene pretty quickly.

Joe Tex and Chuck Willis are pretty marginal players, in my opinion. Inventing "the Stroll" as a dance craze isn't exactly discovering the polio vaccine.

You are correct: Donna Summer is great in her own way, but nothing to do with Rock And Roll except she was on the same label as Kiss (who still aren't in). Laura Nyro is tenuous- she's much more of a sensitive folky, but her songs were covered by rock acts, so I guess she gets a pass.

I believe the Small Faces/Faces were also nominated and i think that's a very worthy inclusion. To get your Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood in their prime, but also rope in Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane (God bless him), Ian McClagan and Kenney Jones- all of whom have made significant contributions to Rock. Also, Joan Jett was nominated and she's been cranking it out since the mid 70s, always stayed true to herself and she plain rawks.

Bon Jovi should be in the wedding music hall of fame.

Joe Tex's music has some great bass playing in it. He is worth a nom.
I think GnR should have been nominated and RHCP.

Agreed. How many people are actually involved? Doesn't the editor of Rolling Stone just pick who he likes? It's as with any "top whatever" list - completely personal and impossible to back it up with any kind of facts or criteria.

I am a fan of RUSH and I think - as do they I believe - that it's better to not be in the R&RHOF.

Beastie Boys most definitely have some great Rock and Roll tunes and IMO are worthy of a nomination. I'm guessing you've listened to very little of their entire body of work and are under the impression that all they do is hip-hop.

Then again, the R&R HOF is kind of a joke, considering some of the acts who have never even been nominated.

No RUSH - No Interest!

Ironically, Cleveland was where Rush first got some serious radio airplay...

I'm getting the feeling that getting nominated for the R&R HOF is kinda like getting a star on the hollywood walk of fame where "who you know" and "$$$" combine together to potentially offset "what you did". Not always true of course but there's always those head scratchers that make you wonder.

After a very quick search on google, it appears the info in the OP is incorrect.

Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Darlene Love, Neil Diamond, and Dr. John were all inducted to the HOF this year (class of 2011)

The nominees for the 2012 class were announced today. The nominees are:

Beastie Boys
The Cure
Donovan
Eric B. & Rakim
Guns 'N Roses
Heart
Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
Freddie King
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rufus with Chaka Khan
The Small Faces/The Faces
The Spinners
Donna Summer

Yep. While Ronnie Spector was the amazing voice on that particular track, Darlene was on that track and many, MANY others leading several differently named girl groups (Phil owned all the names, so he just used whatever girl group name he chose at the time, but it was almost always Darlene Love on lead vocals)

If there actually was a real Rock and Roll HOF, instead of that sham in Cleveland, Darlene Love deserves a spot.

My Bad! When I did a search for nominees it gave me last years list instead of this years. Interesting to see who actually made it out of those nominated last year.

Laura Nyro was a huge influence on the rock scene of the time, besides writing great songs for others, her solo albums were great. If you ever see the unedited version of the Monterey music fest, her song Poverty Train is years beyond a lot of the performers of the era. She has been overlooked for way too long.

It seems anymore that all a band had to do was have a few #1 singles and they're immediately nominated. Bands who were pioneers in their genre or have been together 20 or 30 years should be included as well. But just because you have a few singles should not qualify you to be in the RRHOF.

Rush is my favorite band, but you mention Prog Bands and yet forget King Crimson and Yes???

My thoughts though: The Rock and Roll Hall of fame is nothing. If ABBA can be voted in and not Rush, then they don't know what Rock and Roll is.
