I remember where I was...at my grandparents (r.i.p.) watching MTV and THE video came on. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Even my older brother, a die hard Zep, Who, Yes, Beatles fan said "that's pretty cool man".

In with the 90's, out with the 80's. Stock in hairspray plummeted, as did spandex. Thrift stores saw all their beat up cardigan sweaters and plaid shirts fly off the shelves.

90's rock to me is still the best and last memorable "change" in music for the better.

I'm not the world's biggest Nirvana fan but I certainly think they uncorked some fine songs. I got into them when the "Sliver/Dive" single came out and was crazy about the Bleach album. I remember one of my roomates had bought Nevermind and was playing it late at night in his room a few nights in a row.

I finally asked him what it was he'd been listening to at nights and when he told me I was floored. I mean, I was hearing it wafting across the hallway so it wasn't all that clear, but I thought it was so much poppier than Bleach I didn't even consider it was the same band.

But the songs on it were so catchy to me. They kept going through my head during the day. I remember my friend saying "Yeah, I don't know about this album. It's so different from their last one."

For better or worse, it's one of those albums that weill always be associated with a certain decade and a certain generation.

The album came out around the same time as Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Nevermind was just power - when I first heard the intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit, I was floored. Vig made those drums sound massive.

After In Utero, I didn't dig their stuff. But yeah, I was at a Tower Records in Hollywood when I heard the intro to Teen Spirit. It blew my mind then. Now after 20 years, it seems tame - whether you like the band or not, they changed the course of rock history. While Guns n Roses were getting hard rock/metal back away from the lipstick hair 'metal' bands - Nirvana just took rock back and said here it is: bam!
