The only one that was somewhat surprising was Pipeline. Wasn't that originally a Ventures tune?

It was a Chantays tune that the Ventures (and plenty of other instrumental bands) covered. The Chantays' original is the best and best-known version.

I think this guy's articles are always so lame. Ideally, a music journalist should be like Tom Waits + Robert Siegel. In reality, they usually turn out to be like the guitarist in a one-hit-wonder + Geraldo Rivera.
