311 & Sublime w/Rome tickets

They're playing at this big pavilion here in town. Lowest tickets are $26 (IIRC) but its in a field and its way far away. I think thats what I may go with cause I'd pay about $35-40 to see Sublime alone. But the other option is right in front of the stage, and the tickets are $68, and there are actual seats. But I'm not sure if it's worth it. I've always thought 311 was hit or miss with their songs (absolutely amazing or total $h!t), and I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the risk of them sucking.

Thoughts?

BTW I saw sublime for free in march or april (can't remember), and it was the most kick@$$ thing ever. Not only did they put on a good show, Rome sounded almost spot on to the albums.

I'm going to the show in St. Louis tomorrow. I couldn't care less about 311.

That's an expensive frat party.
The free show mentioned sounds about right.
I've paid in the past to see both- never again.

I'm probably going to see em in Pittsburgh this upcoming Tuesday. All GA admission, Ticketmaster prices as always are through the roof, so I'm gonna show up day of and hopefully get them for cheaper. Have been burned by this in the past though, showed up at the arena day of to avoid Ticketmaster, and at the arena itself the only place to get tickets was a Ticketmaster booth, where they were even MORE expensive than online due to a "day of the show convenience fee."

You know what, if tickets are $50, tell me and I will buy them. Don't tell me they're $20, then charge me $5 for parking (when I take the bus or walk to the show), $10 for "convenience" as if dogging through their website is anywhere near convenient, $10 for random assorted taxes and fees, and another $5 for a "just cause we can" fee. Worst system in the world, and the reason why alot of people dont go to concerts anymore, and alot of bands don't tour anymore. I was SUPER excited to see Limp Bizkit at the local arena (haha I know, you don't have to say it) but they ended up cancelling the show. Why? $25 tickets that were $55 in reality, and NOBODY will pay $55 to see a washed up 90's nu metal rap gang, even if they are Limp Bizkit.

Amen to that. I've been charged all of those fees even when purchasing tickets in person. Nothing convenient about that either.

It sounds like you don't like the scene or these bands..... BTW - both bands have some great bass players (Eric Wilson & P-Nut), and some great song writing as well. Brad Nowell, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh are far from what you would call frat boys, more of ska/punkers if you ask me. When did you pay to see Sublime? '95 or '96, because they just regrouped as a band a couple years back.

Anyways, I've seen Sublime with Rome twice now, and it was a fantastic soulful show both times. I payed for front row tickets as Eric Wilson is my favorite bassist of all time, he is the reason I play today. I like Sublime's music a bit more than 311 though.

I would pay for the tickets, you'll most likely have a fun time. I'm going to the Unity tour on 7/29/11 @ Nissan.

It probably was indeed the mid 90's for sublime, 311 was more recent.
I guess I don't like the scene, it's not the musicians I was referring to, but the audience. But that's just me.

I hear what you mean about the audience. But any music with strong sing along melodies bring that type of crowd. I have always enjoyed the songwriting so much though.

I've heard people talk a lot of crap on Sublime in the past, but they haven't indulged themselves deep into their albums either. They hear everything on the radio - singles - thats it; this is not my reasoning for enjoying Sublime, it's the deeper tracks!

Also - I always felt like Sublime had their own sound of Reggae; almost like they took everything they ever listened to coming up in music and just meshed it into one sound. Hard to do, but they most definately pulled it off. Punk, ska, dub reggae, dancehall, hip hop, physcadelic rock, etc...

As far as 311 goes, I've seen them 5 or 6 times, every time I see them, the songs are the same redundant version; HOW BOUT A LITTLE JAM OR SOMETHING!!! haha, but you guys know what I mean. Back in the day, Sublime never played the song the same way twice. Hendrix was the same, every live show, a wee bit different - I'm a fan of that.

Sublime put on an amazing show last time I went. I cant wait to see them again. But the question wasn't about free or not, it was: Should I pay $30 and stand in a field way far from the stage, or pay $70 and sit near the band?

I feel you. When I went, I think me and my bud were the only ones not drinking or smoking weed. You couldn't take a breath with out it tasting like dope. I got about 2 whole glasses of beer spilled on me, and was forced into a couple of mosh pits. It was kinda fun, for me at least! It was my first actual encounter with real concerts and the crowds, but I can see how it would be a turn off to other people.
