It's a John Cage piece which consists of four minutes and thirty three seconds of rests in three movements.

It is meant to bring the audience to the realization that there is sound all around them and that music is the organization of sound as much as it is about notes etc.

Yep...wish I had thought of it.

Cage's "Radio Music" is another you may wanna check out.

Something else you may "like"-
Charles Ives has a knack of making music that sounds like an out-of-tune marching band.

Sometimes even two out of tune marching bands, in different keys!

Don't forget JC's "As Slow As Possible"...duration: 639 years. It's being performed as we speak and will be done in 2640.

Now THAT'S a long song.

I always liked his "Variations on 'America' "

Check out Edgar Varese and Phillip Glass while you're in the genre.

Really kick-ass piece to play as well. The bass part has some cool lines throughout.

Does John Cage get royalties every time someone gets thrown into isolation?

Me too. I think that it is way easier for musicians to listen to, however. I've performed it, and some people looked genuinely repulsed.

Someone else may be able to expand on this story, but wasn't there an issue where some Artist credited silence on his album to JC (pretty witty IMO) and JC's people when after him for royalties?

I thought 4:33 was the name of one of the tunes on Jauqo's "C# Theory" album
