5 or 6 strings? Oh, no!

It might just be my opinion, but I think a 5 string bass isn't worth it. I shall explain myself. On a 4 string, you can tune down to D and even C (but it sounds pretty muddy). So, with the extra low B of a 5 string, you're only getting a few extra notes. But, with the 5th string, you don't have to tune down at all, making for better and lower bass lines. With that in mind, why not add a higher string? You can also make better solo lines and faster and easier runs with the C string. One example, if you've ever played the Overture of Russlan and Ludmilla on electric bass, instead of moving up and down the G string, you can stay in typically one position with the use of a C string. Any opinions or arguments are welcome. I'm curious to see what other bassists have to say about it.

Why not just get a 5 string with a low B and play in 5th position if you need that high C?

I mean, how often do bass player go beyond the 12 fret anyway? So you're not losing anything anyway.

Thats the same idea with a 5 string. I find that I use the low B more for keeping on the same place of the neck instead of having those extra notes, though I do use them from time to time.

I use a four because it's more comfortable to me. Though I sometimes wish that I had a five so I didn't have to move quite so much.

because 6's either have really big necks or really tight string spacing?

Done to death, and a pretty stupid topic anyway.
