5-string question

Sign in to disble this ad
I play a five string, and I'm curious how many other 5-string players string their basses with a high-C string, as opposed to the low-B string. I string my bass: E-A-D-G-C.

From what I understand, it's much more common to use the low-B. When I originally bought my bass, factory direct from Ken Smith, the sales person asked me if I wanted the low-B, or high-C. I went with the high-C.

Low B for me.

Our band does its best to accommodate dancers, and I'm happiest "in the pocket" so a low B was a good fit for me.

If I spent more time soloing, playing chords, etc., perhaps a high C would be a better fit.

Low B. I want to be able to play in 5th position. My shoulder starts to cramp when I play too low.

I have a low B, but my brother bought one recently with the high C. The low B is definitely more common though.

Yeah I bought my 5er for the low B. Never use the poor thing though.

Low B all the way. I wish a company would offer a 6'er with a low F# instead of the hi C.

My two main basses (fretted and fretless electric) are strung with a low B. My acoustic fretless has a high C.

I can't think of the models, but Warwick have a few basses that are strung lower. One is B E A D, and another is done F# B E A.

Excellent answer. I would just add that if you can't make up your mind buy a 6.

All of my 5s are tuned with a Low B. My 6 is where i get my high C at. I have considered tuning it [the 6] F#-G instead though.

What if someone did A-High F? at that point you might as well get a guitar and detune it...

I have considered getting a 6 with E-High F

get a 6 and get a new nut. if you cant find one that will work, take the one on the 6 and file it out so it is wide enough for the thicker strings

Once thats done, you can get some thick strings from Conklin or some other company

I like to solo and chord, so thats why I have the High C. Mainly its the chording part.

I have gone back and forth between low B and high C a few times. They have their advantages. With the B on, I feel that my bass has a heavier feel to it. It seams like it makes the tone deeper overall. With the C on, it therefore makes it a little more focused on the highs.

the C fits my music better

I keep mine at low B. I haven't even touched my 5 since I got my 6.
