Which of the "500 Greatest Albums" do you own?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody and Happy New Year!

Well, today I found at Wikipedia a reference to the "500 Greatest Albums" list made by the Rolling Stone magazine in 2003. I know, it's the RS mag (no "Moving Pictures" there?) but anyway... with a little time to kill I extracted the ones I own from that list. If you also have some time (not so much required, really) I'd like to know about your personal list. BUT to make it the narrowest possible, please be strict with the albums as listed there. I mean, I have many songs from Hendrix in different compilations, but I don't have any of the albums listed there. I have the whole output from The Police in a 4 CD box set, but I never bought the albums as originally released. I have both live versions of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" but never bought the original album. Got it? Illegally downloaded albums don't apply either.

So here's the link to The RS 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and here's my list with each album's rank:

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles

2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys

3. Revolver, The Beatles

5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles

10. The Beatles ("The White Album"), The Beatles

14. Abbey Road, The Beatles

17. Nevermind, Nirvana

29. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin

39. Please Please Me, The Beatles

43. The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd

66. Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin

68. Off the Wall, Michael Jackson

72. Purple Rain, Prince

73. Back in Black, AC/DC

76. Imagine, John Lennon

86. Let It Be, The Beatles

130. Paranoid, Black Sabbath

131. Saturday Night Fever, Various Artists

140. Parallel Lines, Blondie

152. The B-52's, The B-52's

159. Alive, Kiss

193. Dookie, Green Day

199. Highway to Hell, AC/DC

205. Abraxas, Santana

221. War, U2

241. Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath

243. Freak Out!, The Mothers of Invention

247. Automatic for the People, R.E.M.

252. Metallica, Metallica

260. Buena Vista Social Club , Buena Vista Social Club

293. Greatest Hits, Simon and Garfunkel

296. We're Only In It For the Money, The Mothers of Invention

332. Help!, The Beatles

384. Pyromania, Def Leppard

388. A Hard Day's Night, The Beatles

415. Van Halen , Van Halen

420. With the Beatles, The Beatles

430. At Budokan, Cheap Trick

I only did the top 100 because I am lazy I have almost a quarter of the top 100. If it wasn't so top heavy with Beatles albums, I probably would have done better. Hmmm, no, the next album I have is number 115. So much for that theory.

EDIT: Ok, since everybody else is doing all 500, I will too. Man, do I even drop off after the first 100! I only have 44/500 = 9%.

7. Exile on Main Street, The Rolling Stones
8. London Calling, The Clash
12. Kind of Blue, Miles Davis
15. Are You Experienced?, The Jimi Hendrix Experience

29. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin
33. Ramones, Ramones
45. The Band, The Band
48. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Public Enemy
49. At Fillmore East, The Allman Brothers Band

36/500 = 7.2%

The inclusion of so many greatest-hits collections is troubling. Singles-oriented artists from the '50s and '60s were making individual songs, not albums.

Also, if you include what my brother owns, I'd be up around 40%. We intentionally have very little overlap between our music collections.

I only own 21 of those 500. I used to own a lot more of them, but I went through phases and traded them in for other music.

One album that I was really happy to see on there was Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory (#154). That's one of my favorites of all-time.

I have a really lame CD/Tape collection even though I love a variety of different styles and artists. I don't really buy CD's too much anymore and when I did my tastes were limited and most of those albums aren't on here. A few of them I either had at one time but got lost in moving/being careless over the years or I have on tape and are somewhere in the house, but I still count them

I am pretty disappointed that Rush isn't on here even once and the fact that some albums outrank what I think are worthier albums

17/500 lame...

14. Abbey Road - The Beatles
17. Nevermind - Nirvana
56. Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder
66. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
98. This Year's Model - Elvis Costello
130. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
149. HOuses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
193. Dookie - Green Day
199. Highway to Hell - AC/DC
252. Metallica - Metallica
298. Master of Reality - Black Sabbath
311. Unplugged in New York - Nirvana
317. The Eminem Show - Eminem
336. Superunknown - Soundgarden
384. Pyromania - Def Leppard
439. In Utero - Nirvana
455. Synchronicity - The Police (455???)

I am too lazy to do it again, but when that issue came out, I counted out how many I had. It was close to 300. I believe the exact number was 282 or 284.

So around 56%.

Or another way of looking at it:

Rolling stone had 282 of my 1654 cds on their list, or about 17%

I agreed with a lot of Rolling Stone's selections, but I definitely had some problems with the order. While I know it sold a billion or so copies, IMO Whitney Houston's debut album being 50 spots ahead of Jeff Buckley's "Grace" is a travesty.

I used to own a couple dozen of those when I was a teenager/college kid... Zappa, Hendrix, misc. reggae, Tom Waits, etc.

At present I own Paranoid and Master of Reality by Sabbath, and I have tracks from two or three dozen of the others in misc. compilations.

Plus, my father has all of FZ's albums and most likely Mothers' as well a lot of other stuff - but I didn't count that in.

On my computer I have 111 albums (and that's only what's on my computer)

Holy crap James, you must have quite the cd collection. I guess my taste in music sucks...I do not own a single one of those.

However, I do own cds by artists that are in the list, but that actual album didnt make it on there.

I was surprised to see that I owned at least one record per page of that book. Either I am a hip & cool consumer of all that is hip & cool. Or I am a stooge who was suckered into buying all that corporate produced music being shoved onto the mindless masses.
