70s Fender P/J Bass Cases

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey gang: I'm trying to locate a period-correct case for my early '76 P fretless and my research has led me to conclude that I need an orange/red interior with the Fender logo with no tail but an (R) after Fender (and no Made in USA, which came a couple of years later).

My question is: did Fender make two separate cases for the P and the J at this time? The Jazz is nearly an inch longer because of the body geometry, and all of the casses I've seen have been advertised as for P or J. So, did Fender just make the slightly longer case to snugly fit the Jazz and the P rattled around a bit, or did they make two sizes to fit each just right? Or did they add extra padding to the P case to snug it up?

Thanks!

Fender shipped either bass with the same case. The first time we ever knew of a difference (I was a Fender dealer from '77 - '88) was the tweed cases for the original Vintage Series where a Precision would fit a Jazz case, but the Jazz wouldn't fit the Precision case. Other than that, the standard Tolex case was the same part number no matter which bass you got. The case was interchangeable for the Precision, Jazz, and Telecaster.
