Don't let your pride get hurt too bad . We're still an octave lower. |

What I really want to know is, if you really want to know why, why don't you do some research first. That way you look a lot more well informed and prepared to give a genuine discussion about something with people who do have a clue about this stuff. |

had fanned frets so I could be tuned B-a which it would then be like our 6 string basses having a lowrr string and high string, but having it tuned F# is quite an invasion of our range.

I can't imagine the low F# sounding that great from a fixed scale instrument. Having a great range and consistency isn't an easy find. I thought Ernie Ball's 7 string sounded pretty close to what I'd like. Although, if anyone has links to the songs that use a low f# on guitar, I'd take a listen.
With that being said, I'm most likely going to order a fanned 7 string acoustic, probably 27-24" scale from www.krguitars.com. |

Being a multi-instrumentalist I don't see anything wrong with an 8 string guitar or a 7 string bass or a 10 string chapman, etc etc. They're all just long planks of wood with strings used to make noises.
Why would someone use one? Because they friggin want to.

Don't really understand that mentality towards low tuned guitars and "invading the bass players space"... Then again, one of my basses is tuned to drop G#, and I plan on having a 4 string tuned F#BEA. We can tune to something other than standard too you know...
And Meshuggah is an amazing band.

He's been playing these guitars for years and what he plays works properly in the context of what we are doing. |

| | | | I play a 7 string guitar, and I'd like to get an 8 string tuned to F# in the future. No, bassists are not going to be outsourced by these low tuned guitars, even if bassists stick with more standard tunings, IMHO. |

If you want to imagine what it sounded like, horrible comes close. Bass is for playing bass, absurdly low-tuned guitars are NOT for playing bass, and at that point you might as well just get a bass, which is what I did!
