So my band leader wants me to learn our songs on guitar as well as bass so that when a friend comes into town to play drums the drummer can play bass and I'll back up his guitar.
So I went to GC last night and played guitars for the first time in - shoot at least an year and a half.
I couldn't stop playing...didn't WANT to stop playing! I found a nice MIM strat on CL that I'm going to pick up tonight, but I fear that the evil guitar has me in its grasp again..the tonal possibilities, shredding up some nice solos, heavy bar chord rhythms...I'm on the edge!
WTH do I do now?? Just hope for the best??

I blow my nose at you!
I fart in your general direction!
I wave my private parts at your aunties!
Seriously though, you're allowed to play guitar. Just don't play bass like a guitar. |

It's mint, came with strap, stand, new strings for $275 - it's a freakin awesome guitar, sounds great, nice frets, nice action, 3-single coils. I love it...but have many a chord to learn and strum rhythms to get down
Gonna have to be careful though and spend enough time on bass too. Playing the bass has really changed the way I approach the guitar - I'm more patient, I pay more attention to my left hand technique. Working the slow and clean angle rather than just play it routine.
Oh, and here she is just in case someone says "no pics, no guitar"

I suggest you put a "songbook" together as a reference so it's easy to review the tunes at any time.
Good luck. |

But seriously, unless you're intending to go whole-hog and become a stereotypical whammy-bar-wanker, consider the idea of locking up the tremelo - packing up the space in the body cavity so that it can't move at all
They tend to aggravate tuning problems, especially with light (<.011 high E) strings

Why not just ask the drummer to sit out that set, so the friend can play drums? Is the drummer buying a bass and amp, too? Does this regular drummer have any interest in or aptitude for bass, or is your leader just assuming that "anybody" can play bass, and he can use your gear?
Sometimes you just have to say NO! I'm the bass player, I'm here to play bass. I claim that part of the audio spectrum as my own, and you're not going to put a drummer into that position without a fight from me.
Sounds like a really arrogant band leader to me.

Played bass again today after playing guitar all yesterday, felt perfectly natural. I think playing both just might work
