Acoustic Guitar Strings

My friend is giving me an acoustic that he no longer plays, its an 80's yamaha made in japan. Seems to be nice, i really like the small frets, but it needs some work and definitely new strings. What do you guys recommend? I play DRs on bass so will probably go with their strings, but even they have 3 different types for steel string. Too many options... help me narrow it down by naming brands that work for you.

I like the Elixer Nanowebs in medium on my Taylor. They cost a little more, but really do stay bright longer than traditional bronze strings. The Polywebs have a super smooth feel and last forever, but the extra coating eats up some tone.

I use 100% D'Addario strings on everything I own. They just do good strings at good prices, and I especially love their acoustic strings.

I use the EJ series on my acoustic, and EXP's on my baritone acoustic. If you don't plan on playing all the time, I recommend coated strings, they last a lot longer... but the EJ strings can't be beat for brightness if you're playing more.

Hi.

Another Elixirs on a Taylor user here.

I tried the Eric Clapton signature strings from Martin, but those were horrible IMHO.

D'Addario phosphor bronze strings is something I use if I haven't got the cash for the Elixirs.

Regards
Sam

I only use Elixirs. I prefer the polyweb personally. They have a really silky feel to them. They are a little hard to find at times. Most stores only carry the nanoweb. The polyweb has a nice coating on them that makes them smooth and really cuts down on finger noise. They are about 2x the price but they last a LONG time. Much longer than anything else I have played. I use(d) them on a Breedlove, Rainsong and my old Taylor and Larrivee.

D'Addario makes a pretty decent acoustic string now, that runs about the same price. I still prefer Elixir though.
