Adding signals in Phase?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all

Studying up for my exams and am trying to figure out something. If you add two signals in phase what happens? And similarily what happens if you add the two signals but 180 degrees out of phase?

Wasn't sure whether to put thisin Recording gear or not so I put it here.feel free to move it Mods.

Thanks and regards

Mike

If you introduce to exact same signals 180 degrees out of phase with eachother they will completely cancel eachother out. If it were the same signal in phase with itself I would think that would just double the signal. Varying degrees of phase cancellation can result typically in a weak kinda blah output.

I'm right in assuming that ina balanced cable the hot and cold pins are 180 out of phase thus cancelling hum? But what would happen if they are in phase?
