Since those speakers are not ported, you have a lot more leeway on choosing a replacement speaker (since you don't have to tune the cabinet with a vent). Assuming, the stock woofer is an 8 ohm speaker, you can just replace it with almost any other 12" woofer, realizing that you get what you pay for.
So the important question is:
How much are you willing to put into these speakers to get them to perform the way you want? You can spend the $30 for the speakers from Parts Express and have "meh" sound. If that's all you wanted to do was get them up and running again.
Or you could spend lots more and get increasingly better sound (and also spend money on upgrading the tweeters, wiring, crossover, refurbishing the cabinets, etc..). I have almost the same speakers as yours sitting in my closet and I wanted to do a "restoration with modification" to them but I haven't gotten around to starting the project yet (except for buying and putting together the crossover components). But then you're spending money that you could easily spend on
new speakers.
P.S. My band,
Quagmire, is based in DeKalb, IL and I drive through there every day on my commute to work. Depending on what you decide to do with your speakers, I might be able to help you out with replacement parts, wiring, crossovers and stuff.
And I'll see if I can make it to see your band LLSS this Friday @ PussyGalore. I checked out your band on your MySpace page and you guys sound cool
