ADVENT stereo speaker project questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I have some vintage advent speakers that I got from my dad, but the woofers have been taken out and I'm a little lost as to what my options are -- this is because there is a mounting for a 12 inch woofer, but originally they had 10 inch woofers mounted in a 12 inch basket ( I'm not sure why this is) so my question is should I just put in a 12 inch woofer, or should I try to find some replacements that fit the stock specs? thanks in advance for any advice, also, here is a link to the same model that I am working with:

I read the jimmy neutron.org info. Doubt you'll find any 10" speakers in a 12" basket. I'd put 12's in them. Just find out the speaker details and do some calcs for the speaker box size so it can be tuned properly. There's a some TB'rs that can help you out on the calcs.

I'm not sure what exactly to calculate in order to determine the best candidate for replacement

Since those speakers are not ported, you have a lot more leeway on choosing a replacement speaker (since you don't have to tune the cabinet with a vent). Assuming, the stock woofer is an 8 ohm speaker, you can just replace it with almost any other 12" woofer, realizing that you get what you pay for.

So the important question is: How much are you willing to put into these speakers to get them to perform the way you want? You can spend the $30 for the speakers from Parts Express and have "meh" sound. If that's all you wanted to do was get them up and running again.

Or you could spend lots more and get increasingly better sound (and also spend money on upgrading the tweeters, wiring, crossover, refurbishing the cabinets, etc..). I have almost the same speakers as yours sitting in my closet and I wanted to do a "restoration with modification" to them but I haven't gotten around to starting the project yet (except for buying and putting together the crossover components). But then you're spending money that you could easily spend on new speakers.

P.S. My band, Quagmire, is based in DeKalb, IL and I drive through there every day on my commute to work. Depending on what you decide to do with your speakers, I might be able to help you out with replacement parts, wiring, crossovers and stuff.

And I'll see if I can make it to see your band LLSS this Friday @ PussyGalore. I checked out your band on your MySpace page and you guys sound cool

I've gotten my old Advent utility speakers re-coned at this place years ago, they took my old speakers and gave me a new set already re-coned. So I'm guessing they would have what you need.

For me they are about 1/2 hour from here so it's very handy. Great knowledgeable people there too.
Dirk
p.s. always enjoyed the low end in those cabinets, very round.
I still have them in my studio since I know their sound only too well, so they make great additional monitors.

hbarcat, thanks for the advice and kind words. I think I'm going to order the speakers from parts express because I'm on a particularly tight budget at the moment and it would be nice to get them working and then consider upgrading them in the future. I'm hoping to be able to afford a vintage marantz 1060 to pair these up with as well, I think it will sound great. and Dirk, it is good to know that you have had a positive experience with the speakers, it makes me excited to get them up and running.
