Advice for Washington, DC

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks,

I will be going for a business trip to Washington - and I'm sure there will be some hours off. So, what's the advice, where should I drop in for a vist. Any shops recommended, clubs, places to be in the evening ....

Let the ideas roll in.

Thanks,

Tom

Totally do the tourist thing and check out all the monuments.

Or do the national treasure thing and search for hidden templar gold and kidnap the president.

Either choice ensures a successful trip.

The WWII Memorial is awesome, but even more so when viewed at night.

Hit the Smithsonian museums if you somehow end up with a bunch of day time off. They are free - start at Natural History and Air and Space.

Check out the 930 Club for live music, primarily rock. Check out Blues Alley for jazz and blues...very small, intimate, and historical club in Georgetown. Hit M Street in Georgetown for bars and restaurants. Adams Morgan is another good area for nightlife.

Most importantly....numbered streets go North/South and lettered streets go east/west. Don't trust the state streets - they go diagonal.

I agree the monuments all look better at night

As others have suggested there are a bunch of museums and monuments, most of them free. And they are mostly in the same area -- the Mall.

18th St. & Columbia Rd. NW has a thriving nightlife. On Fridays and Saturdays the sidewalks are packed. Its generally a younger crowd, but there are a lot of restaurants around there, during the day, that are very good. My fave is Amsterdam Falafel, if you want something quick and cheap and good. U St. also has some good places to eat as well.

As mentioned, M St. in Georgetown is an nice little area, lots of boutiques, if that's your thing, and some decent bars.
